Reuss-Lobenstein-Ebersdorf 1847-A 2 thaler Dav-806
This specimen was lot 40542 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $7,475. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Reuss-Lobenstein-Ebersdorf. 2 Taler, 1847-A. NGC MS-65. Struck to commemorate the 25th year in the reign of Heinrich LXXII as Prince. From a mintage of only 500 pieces. Toned." Reuss was one of the splinter states of Saxon Thuringia and itself underwent several divisions. Many rulers were named Heinrich and several lines consolidated their numbering, resulting in this prince becoming Heinrich the seventy-seventh. He merged Reuss-Ebersdorf and Reuss-Lobenstein in 1822 and then abdicated in favor of Reuss-Schleiz in 1849. This type is rare.
