Künker sale 263, lot 1342

This specimen was lot 1342 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-COBURG UND GOTHA, HERZOGTUM Ernst II. 1844-1893. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1847. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Ernest II, 1844-93, double union thaler of 1847. Scarce, very fine to extremely fine.)"

In 1826, the duke exchanged Saalfeld for Gotha and assumed the title of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. This is the first double thaler from the duke's son, Ernest II. His younger brother Albert married queen Victoria of Britain and became Prince Consort.

Recorded mintage: 10,700.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge.
