Frankfurt 1847 2 thaler Dav-641
This specimen was lot 877 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $390. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANKFURT AM MAIN: Free City, AR 2 thalers / 3½ gulden, 1847, an attractive nearly mint state lustrous example, PCGS graded AU58, ex Almer Orr III Collection." This type was struck 1841-47, 1851, 1854-55, and, like most double thalers, can be expensive. Frankfurt, the seat of the imperial diet, was the center of the agitation for unification in the 1840's. This failed during the revolution of 1848 when the king of Prussia refused the crown of a united Germany. Frankfurt was annexed by Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ceased.
Recorded mintage: 70,920.
Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 40 mm diameter, lettered edge.
