This specimen was lot 71145 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Frankfurt. Gulden, 1848. Free City. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just one example, this delightful near-Gem minor presents mostly argent central fields that yield to a captivating partial ring of vibrant iridescence." This denomination, slightly larger than a French two francs, was struck in Frankfurt 1838-63. This date is common for the type, which was issued 1842-55. It was accompanied by a half gulden and double gulden (Dav-642).
