This specimen was lot 24007 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "Frankfurt. Free City Proof 2 Gulden 1848, PF64 NGC, light russet toning with substantial reflectivity around the devices." This specimen is one of a series struck during the exciting days of 1848-49, when liberals gathered at Frankfurt to establish a German empire with a constitution and a parliament. The effort collapsed when Frederick William of Prussia refused the crown and unification had to wait until 1871, when Bismarck successfully prosecuted the Franco-Prussian War.
