Schulman auction 389, lot 92
Schulman 389-092r.jpg

This specimen was lot 92 in Schulman auction 389 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,382 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - 2 Thaler or 31/2 Gulden 1844, Silver, FRANKFURT A/M Cityscape. Rev. value and date within wreath. Ex Cherry Tree Collection. PCGS MS62." This type was struck 1840-44 and is not rare in lightly circulated condition. As the thaler shrank from the convention thaler (28.06 g) to the vereinsthaler (18.52 g), the double thaler came back into fashion for commemoratives. City view thalers, so popular in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, were becoming quaint in the 1840's and this one may be the last one ever issued.

Recorded mintage: 195,630 including KM 329.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, lettered edge, this specimen 37.07 g.

Catalog reference: KM 326, AKS 3; J. 15 Kahnt 181; Dav-640.
