Hohenzollern Stacks Jan15-659r.jpg

This specimen was lot 659 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. 2 Taler, 1844. NGC MS-62. Finest certified example. Dark toning with reflective underlying luster. Sharply struck and very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." This type of 1844-47 is among the final issues of this principality. The prince abdicated in favor of Prussia in 1849. As the thaler shrank from the convention thaler (28.06 g) to the vereinsthaler (18.52 g), the double thaler came back into fashion for commemoratives.

Recorded mintage: 3,300.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: Dav-719; KM-23.
