Hesse Darmstadt 1844 2 thaler rev Goldberg 74-4337.jpg

This specimen was lot 4337 in Goldberg sale 74 (Los Angeles, June 2013), where it sold for $230 including buyer's fees. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - Hesse-Darmstadt. 2 Talers, 1844. Ludwig III. Small edge nick. Toned. Very Fine to Extremely Fine. The George C. Follis Collection." This one year type is rather scarce. As the thaler shrank from the convention thaler (28.06 g) to the vereinsthaler (18.52 g), the double thaler came back into fashion for commemoratives.

Recorded mintage: 377,000.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.074 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Dav-703; Thun-199; KM-320.
