Künker Auction 425, lot 2310

This specimen was lot 2310 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,558 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · REUSS-OBERGREIZ, GRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1778 FÜRSTENTUM Heinrich XX., 1836-1859. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1844. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, principality of Reuss-Obergreiz, Henry XX, 1836-59, union double thaler of 1844. Abot extremely fine.)"

Reuss was one of the splinter states of Saxon Thuringia and itself underwent several divisions. Many rulers were named Heinrich and several lines consolidated their numbering, resulting in this prince becoming Heinrich the twentieth. This type was struck 1841, 1844, 1848 and 1851 at Berlin and is very scarce. As the thaler shrank from the convention thaler (28.06 g) to the vereinsthaler (18.52 g), the double thaler came back into fashion for commemoratives.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 40 mm diameter, lettered edge.
