Frankfurt 1846 2 thaler Dav-641
This specimen was lot 938 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €220 (about US$303 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, FRANCFORT, Ville libre, AR double Taler (3 1/2 Gulden), 1846. Très Beau. (Germany, city of Frankfurt, silver double thaler of 1846. Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1841-47, 1851, 1854-55, and, like most double thalers, can be expensive. Frankfurt, the seat of the imperial diet, was the center of the agitation for unification in the 1840's. This failed during the revolution of 1848 when the king of Prussia refused the crown of a united Germany. Frankfurt was annexed by Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ceased.
Recorded mintage: 72,120, a slightly better date.
