Sincona sale 9, lot 3706

This specimen was lot 3706 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Bayern, Königreich Ludwig I. 1825-1848. Doppelter Vereinstaler 1846. Ludwigskanal. Haarlinien und kl. Kr. Vorzüglich aus Polierter Platte. (Kingdom of Bavaria, Louis I, 1825-48, double union thaler of 1846, on the opening of the Ludwigs Canal. Light hairlines, extremely fine on a polished planchet.)"

This type honored the opening of the Ludwigs Canal joining the Rhine and Main Rivers. This canal fell out of use after the coming of the railroad and silted up. It was greatly enlarged and reopened in the late 1980's as the Rhine-Main Canal.
