Frankfurt 1843 2 thaler Dav-640
This specimen was lot 50439 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $267. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Frankfurt. 2 Taler, 1843. PCGS Genuine--Cleaning, AU Details Secure Holder. KM-326. City view. Hairlines from cleaning." This type was struck by the free city of Frankfurt am Main 1840-44. Its face value of two thalers was equal to 3½ gulden. City view thalers, so popular in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, were becoming quaint in the 1840's and this one may be the last one ever issued. Frankfurt was annexed by Prussia in 1866 and its coinage ceased.
