Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 1854-F 2 thaler Dav-824
This specimen was lot 1343 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,067 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-COBURG UND GOTHA, HERZOGTUM Ernst II. 1844-1893. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1854. Winz. Randfehler, vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Ernest II, 1844-93, double union thaler of 1854. Minor rim crack, extremely fine.)"
In 1826, the duke exchanged Saalfeld for Gotha and assumed the title of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. This is the second and last double thaler from the duke's son, Ernest II. His younger brother Albert married queen Victoria of Britain and became Prince Consort.
