Saxony 1854-F 2 thaler Dav-874
The first specimen was lot 736 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 2 Taler, 1854-F. NGC MS-64. Smoky overcast tone cannot hold back the reflective underlying surfaces. Most common date of the issue, but in extraordinary condition. Combined NGC/PCGS shows pop one, with only one finer in 65." This double thaler was struck in the kingdom of Saxony 1839-54. Most double thalers are rare but this type is fairly common, coming from a silver-producing state. Friedrich August II was king of Saxony 1836-54. Saxon coinage, after a thousand years of minting, ceased in 1918 with the collapse of the second Reich. The second specimen was lot 3809 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €190 (about US$269 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SACHSEN, KÖNIGREICH Friedrich August II., 1836-1854. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1854 F. Kl. Kratzer, min. Randfehler, sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II, 1836-54, union double thaler of 1854. Hairlines, minor edge defects, very fine.)"
Recorded mintage: 886,000 (highest mintage date).
Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge, the second specimen 37,08 g.
