Künker sale 400, lot 233

This specimen was lot 233 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$8,433 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich August II. 1836-1854. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1848, F. Äußerst seltener Jahrgang. Prachtexemplar. Kabinettstück. Feine Patina, Erstabschlag, fast Stempelglanz. Aus einer rheinischen Privatsammlung. (Germany, kingdom of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II, 1836-54, double union thaler of 1848. extremely rare date, choice example, cabinet piece, fine patina, first strike, about uncirculated. From a Rhenish private collection.)"

This type, struck 1839-54, is among the more common double thalers of nineteenth century Germany.

Recorded mintage: 78,000.
