Saxony SB819-20655r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20655 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Gold Medallic Ducat, ca. 1870. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August II. NGC PROOF-62 Cameo. Though dated 1847, these medallic issues, with a mintage of about 70 pieces, were in fact struck around 1870 and meant to be prizes for the annual archery festival. Highly lustrous and prooflike, with a charming cameo nature." The anachronistic date was likely selected because ducats were last struck in 1838.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-2896; KM-unlisted.
