Jean Elsen sale 111, lot 965
Nassau 1860 thaler rev JElsen 111-965.jpg

This specimen was lot 965 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it sold for 100 euro (about US$154 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, NASSAU, Adolph (1839-1866), AR Vereinstaler, 1860, presque Superbe. (Germany, Nassau, Adolf (1839-66), silver vereinsthaler of 1860, nearly extremely fine)"

This type of 1859-60 has a low mintage but is not rare, suggesting that it was extensively saved. The duchy was annexed to Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ceased. Adolphe later became grand duke of Luxembourg (r. 1890-1905).

Recorded mintage: 30,000.

Specification: 18.52 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: J-60; A.K.S., 63; Thun, 234; Dav-747, KM 1091.
