This specimen was lot 23872 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Frankfurt. Free City gold Ducat 1853, MS60 NGC, prooflike mint luster with sharp details, small contact marks in the fields including an unusual rough area below the eagle. Scarce low mintage type." This type, issued 1853 and 1856, appeared at a time when ducats were becoming distinctly unfashionable. This type is rare.
