Sincona sale 26, lot 3086

This specimen was lot 3086 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$618 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Consulat, 1799-1804 1 Franc AN 12 (1803-04). BB, Strasbourg Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön (France, Consulate, one franc of the year 12, Strasbourg mint. Very fine or better.)"

This issue, from the Strasbourg mint, is a rare issue of a type struck AN XI-12. A complete set of this type comprises 22 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. During An 12, Napoleon promoted himself from First Consul to Emperor, causing a design change in the coinage. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819, this specimen 4.93 g.

Recorded Mintage: 5,737.

Catalog reference: F.201/9, KM 649.2, Gadoury 442.
