Sincona sale 23, lot 2513

This specimen was lot 2513 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$201 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, Consulat, 1799-1804 5 Francs AN 12 (1803/04). B-Rouen, Sehr schön-schön. (France, Consulate (1799-1804), five francs of the year 12, Rouen mint. fine to very fine.)"

Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Rouen mint (mint mark "B") in 1803-04. It is a somewhat scarce type and this is a better date. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the second, struck 1803-04 (AN 12) with a complete set of this type comprising fifteen date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. This date is common for the type. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 34,557.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, this specimen 24.63 g. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: Dav-82, KM-660.2; Gadoury 577, F.301/11.
