SB925-71235r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71235 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Consulate. 2 Francs, Year 12-Q (1803/4). Perpignan Mint. Napoleon (as First Consul). PCGS VF-30. Exhibiting only even, honest handling across its surfaces, this minor presents some alluring color among the fields. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Carol Plante on 19 January 1982 for $300)." Year 12 (1803-04) represents the first year all the silver and gold denominations appeared. This type was struck year 12 only and the Paris mint product is moderately common; the others are all scarce to very rare.

Recorded mintage: 21,433[2], a scarce date. The Perpignan mint did not strike any two francs of the Empereur type in year 12.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: F.250/11, KM-657.11; Gad-494.
