Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 43364
SB825-43364r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43364 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 5 Francs, Year 12-D (1803/4). Lyon Mint. Napoleon. PCGS EF-45. One of just two observed in the PCGS census, this lightly toned and very lightly circulated specimen emanates from an emission difficult to encounter in more elevated states of preservation, as is the case here. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Jacques Schulman in Amsterdam on 10 October 1970 for $112)." This type was struck year 12 only after Napoleon had declared himself emperor. The issues of years 13 and 14 used an older bust. This is a very scarce date with three reported in Le Franc, which probably doesn't include this example.

Recorded mintage: 14,238 plus 115,664 of the PREMIER CONSUL type (F.301/13).

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: Dav-83; Sobin-54; KM-660.4; Gad-579; F.302/3.
