Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71333

This specimen was lot 71333 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, Year 12-B (1803/4). Rouen Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-50. A RARER type, especially when encountered as attractive as here, this wholesome minor also displays some pleasing carnival glass toning. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Glendining's in 1964 for $18). Ex: Glendining's (10/1964) Lot # 1055 (part of)." Year 12 (1803-04) represents the first year all the silver and gold denominations appeared. This type was struck years 12-14 and the Paris mint product is moderately common; the others are all scarce to very rare.

Recorded mintage: 13,837[2], a rare date. The Rouen mint did not strike any two francs of the Premier Consul type in An 12.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
