Sincona sale 102, lot 5272

This specimen was lot 5272 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 4,000 CHF (about US$6,029 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Genf/Genève, Stadt und Kanton, 1 Franc AN 12 (1803-1804) G, Genf. Wellenförmiger Rand. Äusserst selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Nur 7'397 Exemplare geprägt. Hübsche Patina. Leicht dezentriert. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, city and canton of Geneva, one franc of the year 12, Geneva mint. Wavy rim, Extremely rare, especially in this condition. Only 7,394 specimens struck, Attractively toned, Slightly off-center, Extremely Fine.)"

This issue, from the Geneva mint, is a rare date of a type struck AN XI-12. A complete set of this type comprises 22 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. During An 12, Napoleon promoted himself from First Consul to Emperor, causing a design change in the coinage. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.

Recorded mintage: 7,394.

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819, this specimen 5.09 g.
