SB222-73634r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73634 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 5 Francs, L'An 12 (1803/4)-MA. Marseille Mint. Napoleon (as First Consul). NGC AU-53. Only lightly passed in circulation, this charming Napoleonic crown provides much in the way of details and an attractive molten gray color to boot." Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Perpignan mint (mint mark "Q") in 1803-04. It is a rather scarce type struck part of one year only. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the second, struck 1803-04 (AN 12) with a complete set of this type comprising thirteen date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. This date is scarce for the type, being priced about five times the Paris mint issue. The Marseille mint also struck five francs with the EMPEREUR obverse but the result is today rare, with only one known to exist[2]. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 148,971 plus 2,030 of the EMPEREUR obverse[2].

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: F.301/21, Dav-82; KM-659.11; Gad-577.
