SB626-71359b.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 71359 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), which sold for $854. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Consulate—Empire. Quintet of Francs (5 Pieces), Year 12 (1803/4) to 1814. Napoleon I. Grade Range: EXTREMELY FINE Details to ABOUT UNCIRCULATED. 1) Consulate. Year 12-M (1803/4), Toulouse. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED. 5) Empire. 1814-A, Paris. 4.98 g. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED. Cleaned. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This issue, from the Toulouse mint, is a slightly scarce issue of a type struck AN XI-12. A complete set of this type comprises 22 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. During An 12, Napoleon promoted himself from First Consul to Emperor, causing a design change in the coinage (see KM 656.10). In 1806, the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.

Recorded mintage: 285,304 plus 300,044 of the EMPEREUR type (KM 656.10).

Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, decorated edge, engraved by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier. This specimen is 4.99 g.

Catalog reference: F.200/16, KM-649.9; Gad-442.
