Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72561
SB1024-72561r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72561 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1886-Cn AM. Culiacan Mint. PCGS MS-61. A decently struck example, with even gray tone and a small mark above the date. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." This date from the Culiacan mint is common. Assayer AM is known for 1882-99. The Culiacan mintmark, originally a plain "C", was changed to "CN" in 1874 although some 1885 dated coins are known with a "C". The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.

Recorded mintage: 571,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.3; DP-Cn48.
