Mexico 1886-Cn AM 8 reales

Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72561

This specimen was lot 72561 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1886-Cn AM. Culiacan Mint. PCGS MS-61. A decently struck example, with even gray tone and a small mark above the date. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." This date from the Culiacan mint is common. Assayer AM is known for 1882-99. The Culiacan mintmark, originally a plain "C", was changed to "C^N" in 1874 although some 1885 dated coins are known with a "C". The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.
