This specimen was lot 1411 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 10 Pesos, 1886 Oa E. Oaxaca. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Rv. Cap and Rays above scales of Justice, dagger, and scroll of laws. A rare date with a mintage reported of 400 pieces. Interesting with some minor handling marks on the rims and a nick on the scroll too. Lustrous, minor hairlines and a tough date to obtain. Choice About Uncirculated." The Oaxaca mint struck this type 1870-88, its only issue of decimal gold. The early dates (1870-73) are fairly common but the later ones are all scarce.
