This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1870-90 at the Guanajuato mint, which closed in 1900. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. SCWC records various overdates (1886/66, 1886/69, 1886/5) in addition to the regular date. This specimen was lot 9091 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $517.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guanajuato. 25 Centavos, 1886/66-GoR/S. NGC MS-66."

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 322,000.
