This specimen was lot 72278 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1886-Pi C. San Luis Potosí Mint. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. A fairly SCARCE issue, this lightly handled minor exhibits a rather appealing and alluring toning comprised of amber, cobalt, and golden-orange." The San Luis Potosí mint issued this type 1870-87. The weight and fineness matched the old four reales but this coin is smaller and thicker. Assayers C and R exist for this date as well as an 1886/1 overdate.

Recorded mintage: 92,000 (including assayer R), a slightly scarce date.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
