Mexico 1886-Pi C 50 centavos

from Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72278

This specimen was lot 72278 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $228. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1886-Pi C. San Luis Potosí Mint. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. A fairly SCARCE issue, this lightly handled minor exhibits a rather appealing and alluring toning comprised of amber, cobalt, and golden-orange." The San Luis Potosí mint issued this type 1870-87. The weight and fineness matched the old four reales but this coin is smaller and thicker. Assayers C and R exist for this date as well as an 1886/1 overdate.

Recorded mintage: 92,000 (including assayer R), a slightly scarce date.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
