Shown is an 1886AsL five centavos, of a type struck 1874-95. This issue from Alamos is a common date. The second specimen is a rare variety wherein the die for the gold peso was substituted for the obverse. Mulings are known for the Culiacan ten centavos as well. Other mints include Hermosillo, Culiacan, Durango, Zacatecas, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca and Potosi. The second specimen was lot 3399 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO: Republic, AR 5 centavos, 1886-As, assayer L; struck with gold one Peso obverse die, NGC graded XF40, RR."

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, .039 troy oz ASW.

Mintage: 43,000 (all varieties).
