Mexico 1886-Zs Z 25 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 72194

This specimen was lot 72194 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 25 Centavos, 1886-Zs Z. Zacatecas Mint. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. Only example graded by NGC. Attractive multi-color toning that obscures most evidence of cleaning. Scarcer assayer, especially in high grade. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1873-90 at the Zacatecas mint, which closed in 1905. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. This assayer operated 1886-1904.

Recorded mintage: 613,000 including assayer S.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, 25 mm diameter, reeded edge.
