Mexico 1885-Cn AM 8 reales
This specimen was lot 70388 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1885-Gn AM. Culiacan Mint. NGC AU-53. Variety with "Gn" mintmark and crude cap and eagle. This interesting and ever popular issue exhibits a good strike with even wear primarily contained to the high points and exposed areas. The surfaces display an attractive mottled gray patina with remaining luster in the protected areas. Wholesome with good eye appeal, a charming example of this sought after variety." The Culiacan mint was opened in 1846 and struck all the silver and gold denominations. The early issues are scarce but become more common after 1855. Assayer AM is listed for 1883-97. For 1885, the SCWC reports 1885-C (scarce), 1885/6 overdate (common), 1885-CN (common) and 1885-GN (shown here, somewhat scarce). The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.
Recorded mintage: 227,000 (all varieties).
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
