Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72190
SB223-72190r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72190 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1885/3-Cn M/H. Culiacan Mint. PCGS VF-35. Overdate and overassayer variety. A SCARCE date, this variety presents a good deal of handling and time in circulation, but nevertheless remains free from issue and a charming representative." Shown here is a balance scale fifty centavos, of a type struck 1869-1895. This issue from Culiacan is a rather scarce date for the mint, and only overdates are known for 1885. Like most fifty centavos, high grade specimens are extremely rare.

Recorded mintage: 9,254, a better date.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-407.2.
