Mexico 1885-Pi LC 8 reales

The specimen shown is an 1885Pi-LC eight reales from the San Luis Potosí mint, which struck the type 1827-93. The San Luis Potosí mint closed in 1893, having struck most of the silver and copper denominations but never issued gold. The SCWC lists assayers LC and MH as well as overdates 1885/8 and 1885/4, none rare. This specimen was lot 6451 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $138. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Potosi. 8 Reales, 1885-LC. Mint mark appears as 'Pt' instead of 'Pi'. Slightly weak strike, light toning. UNCIRCULATED."

Recorded mintage: 1,736,000 (all assayers).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
