Mexico 1885-Mo M 20 pesos

from the Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 21193

This specimen was lot 21193 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 20 Pesos, 1885-Mo M. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-61. Tied with just one other example as the finest for the date in the PCGS census, this highly brilliant specimen exhibits an alluring golden-orange tone along with displaying only minor, lightly scattered marks." This specimen is one of a series struck at the Mexico City mint 1870-1905. Although production was substantial, many dates are rare. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.
