Heritage sale 410, lot 14286

The specimen shown was lot 14286 in Heritage sale 410 (Long Beach, June 2006) where, despite a $1800-2250 estimate, it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic pattern 10 Centavos 1868 Mo-C, KM-Pn109, XF details with moderate to heavy contact marks. An extremely rare pattern issue and the first example this cataloger has seen."

The regular issue ranged 1869-97 from Mexico City, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Chihuahua, Culiacan, Guadalajara, Alamos, Hermosillo, Durango and even Oaxaca. Numismatists debate whether this issue was a pattern or a limited production mintage. See also the similarly unlisted 1868-Mo 5 centavos, which is also seldom seen but not so rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, .078 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 403.7 (unlisted date).
