Mexico 1811 escudo rev DSL.jpg

The first specimen was lot 3224 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $632.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1811/0 HJ 1 escudo. Mexico City mint. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous medium gold. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck 1809, 1811 and 1812 only and is much scarcer than the preceding escudo of Charles IV (KM 120) and the succeeding type with the standard bust (KM 122). All known specimens of the 1811 are overdates.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, .875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 3.34 grams, 18.20 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16136, KM 121, Fr-49.
