This specimen was lot 643 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £1,700 (about US$2,633 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 5 pesos, Chihuahua mint, 1888 M, very light traces of solder in milling at the top edge (this remaining after expert removal of a mount which has left the coin itself undamaged), light contact wear but generally better than very fine, extremely rare and the only 5 pesos to have been minted at Chihuahua [120 pieces struck]." The Mexico City mint issued a steady series of this denomination 1870-1905 and there are a few available dates from Zacatecas and Culiacan but the other mints (Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Hermosillo) are all rare or uncollectible. This is the only issue from Chihuahua.
Recorded mintage: 120.
Specification: 8.46 g, .875 fine gold, .238 troy oz AGW, this specimen 8.48 g.
