Mexico 1873-Zs YH 8 reales
This specimen was lot 70917 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1873-Zs YH. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-61. Tied for second finest certified of the date with three other examples on the NGC population report, only one finer (MS 62). This example boasts a strong strike with bold frosty devices and lustrous surfaces with a bit of reflectivity in the protected areas. An attractive faint sun set hued patina adds to its pleasing appearance and eye appeal. An underrated date in Mint State and even more so with a sharp strike." The Zacatecas mint is tied with Guanajuato as the most prolific mint during the Republic and most of the eight reales struck 1825-97 are common, as is this one. Assayer YH operated 1868-74. No eight reales were made 1871-72 as the mint switched to balance scale pesos. When these were rejected in the China trade, the mint reverted to the cap and ray eight reales shown here. No varieties are reported in the SCWC for the year.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
