Mexico 1834-Ga FS 1/2 escudo
This specimen was lot 1350 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted,
"MEXICO. Republic. ½ Escudo, 1834 Ga FS. Guadalajara. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. A well struck beauty of this extremely rare date. Perhaps this is the coin from the 1975 ANA Sale by Superior, lot 2251, but as there was no plate this remains uncertain. Richard A. Long lists just 2 examples that he knows of in his extensive research of the Early Mexican Republic. Another example is reported as AU. Regardless, this date is virtually unheard of in any grade and the present coin is quite attractive. The strike is sharp with the eagle complete even as its body crosses the breast of the eagle. A great rarity for the specialist. Choice Extremely Fine."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold, .049 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: KM 378.2, Fr-113.
