Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 73004

This specimen was lot 73004 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $976. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1834-Ca MR. Chihuahua Mint. NGC F-12. Very rare date of this scarce mint. Attractive example. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." The Chihuahua mint was opened in 1811 by the royalists during the War of Independence and operated until 1822. It seems to have closed until 1831, when it resumed striking eight reales of republican design. Two reales are noted for 1832-36, 1845 and 1855. The SCWC does not give them a high catalog value but all are scarce to rare. The mint was closed in 1895. Assayer MR is noted for 1831-34. Assayer AM also struck two reales in 1834. Other mints include Zacatecas, Mexico City, Alamos, Hermosillo, Potosi, Culiacan, Guadalajara, Durango, Guanajuato, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated.
