This specimen was lot 73212 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1826-Do RL. Durango Mint. NGC AU-58. A seemingly RARE date in this state of preservation with a totally of only 2 examples graded at NGC, none listed on the PCGS population report. The piece exhibits a bold strike, lustrous surfaces and rich old envelope tone. A nice treat for the specialist looking for high quality survivors to add to their collection." Shown is an 1826-Do RL two reales, one of a type struck at the Durango mint 1826, 1832-61. Assayer RL is recorded this mint for the years 1825-29. Other mints include Guanajuato, Mexico City, Alamos, Hermosillo, Zacatecas, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Potosi, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. This is a better date of a less common mint.
