Mexico 1826-Zs AZ 8 reales

This eight reales is one of a series struck 1825-97 at the Zacatecas mint. This date is scarce compared to the later issues of the 1880's and 1890's. Assayer AZ is recorded for 1825-26; assayers AV and AO are also noted for this date, both scarce. This specimen was lot 21568 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1826Zs-AZ, choice UNC with old-time cabinet patina and flashy lustrous surfaces. The strike is exceptionally sharp on both sides and the overall eye appeal is undeniable."
