This eight reales is one of a series struck 1825-97 at the Zacatecas mint. This date is scarce compared to the later issues of the 1880's and 1890's. Assayer AZ is recorded for 1821 and 1825-27. One surmises that the Zacatecas mint operated 1822-24, striking royalist eight reales with the frozen date 1821. The second specimen was lot 6456 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $212.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. 8 Reales, 1825-AZ. Toned. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 377.13, DP-Zs01.
