Mexico 1825-Ga FS 8 reales

Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73163

This specimen was lot 73163 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $576. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1825-Ga FS. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. A fairly well-preserved example of this SCARCE first date for Guadalajara. Light cleaning marks, largely concealed by the moderate dusty tone, are noted." Altho the Guadalajara mint was opened in the early days of the War of Independence, the early dates of the cap-and-ray eight reales are all rare. The first affordable date is 1832 and the first common date is 1859. No "hook-neck" eight reales are known from Guadalajara; we presume the mint was striking colonial eight reales with the frozen date of 1822. Assayer FS operated 1818-36.
