Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71374

This specimen was lot 71374 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, Year 13-B (1804/5). Rouen Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS VF-20. A fairly RARE type, this specimen does display a large degree of handling from time spent in circulation, but nevertheless remains enchanting and wholly original. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Boutin in 1957 for $1.90). Ex: Serge Boutin FPL 99 (3/1957) Lot # 233." This type was struck AN 12-14 only and is scarce, especially compared to the An 13-A (m. 2,452,806). There are two examples known, one with a hole[2]. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[2] notes 39 dates for the type, most very rare.

Recorded mintage: 2,900[2], a rare date.

Specification: 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
