Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71375

This specimen was lot 71375 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, Year 13-D (1804/5). Lyon Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Fine Details. Even though there is noted cleaning and extensive handling, this specimen remains a quality representative from a SCARCE emission. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Bonham's in 1995 for $150). Ex: Bonham's London (3/1995) Lot # 535 (part of)." This type was struck AN 12-14 only and is rare, especially compared to the An 13-A (m. 2,452,806). There are three examples known[2]. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[2] notes 39 dates for the type, most very rare.

Recorded mintage: 10,358[2], a rare date.

Specification: 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
