SB125-34183r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34183 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Demi-Franc (1/2 Franc), Year 13-D (1804/5). Lyon Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-58. An EXTREMELY RARE offering given the paltry mintage figure, this lightly circulated minor no doubts stands as a tremendous opportunity for the connoisseur of the series--a fact that is confirmed by Margolis's acquisition price when this splendid example crossed the auction block nearly a decade-and-a-half ago (€3,300 hammer). From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from iNumis in 2011 for $4,646). Ex: ST Collection (iNumis 16 - 10/2011) Lot #850." This dime-sized coin was struck at Lyon under the régime of Napoleon soon after he made himself emperor of France. The type was struck AN12-14 only and is rather scarce. It was demonetized in 1869. This date is priced about seven times the common date (An 13-A).

Recorded mintage: 2,396[2].

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: KM-655.3; Gad-395; F.174/12.
